Abstract

Azospirillum is non simbiotik nitrogen-fixing soil bacterium, belong to Plant Growth Rhizobacteria (PGPR) which has high ability to colonize rhizosphere, increase the absorption of nutrients and produce phytohormones such as IAA (Indole Acetic Acid). Corn is an important food commodity and highly responsive to the change of nutrients, especially nitrogen. Efforts to use PGPR association such as Azospirillum with plants is very important in order to mantain soil fertility and enhance plant growth. This study was conducted to know the effect os Azozpirillum spp. C4 plant isolates in promoting corn growth in sterile medium, the ability to colonize the roots of corn plants, and the ability of selected isolates to produce IAA. The research was done experimentaly using completely randomized design (CDR) with 6 kinds of treatment i, e. treatment without bacterial inoculation (only distilled water, Nutrient Broth), treatments with inoculation od C4C2b3.l isolate, C4C1a3.2, isolate, C4D1b4 isolate, and C4A2a3 isolate. Each treatment was repeated 3 times. The study was conducted in axenic sand culture assay by using glass tubes measuring 3 x 20 cm in diameters. Data were analyzed using analysis of variance (ANOVA) at the 95% and 99% confidence levels. Result showed that the inoculations of Azospirillum spp. were able to increase growth of corn plants. Population number ao Azospirillum on roots was 13,38 x 10 9 cfu g -1 root. C4D1b4 and C4C1a3.2 isolates wrer capable of producing IAA as amounts of 2,874 ppm and 3,644 ppm.
