Apryan Noegraha, Rafy. 2022. Subtitling Strategy and Readability of Directive Speech Act in Genshin Impact Prologue Chapter Subtitle. Thesis. English Literature Study Program. English Department. Supervisor 1: Raden Pujo Handoyo, S.S., M.Hum., Supervisor 2: Ambhita Dhyaningrum, S.S., M.Hum., External Examiner: Dyah Raina Purwaningsih, S.S., M.Hum. This research entitled Subtitling Strategy and Readability of Directive Speech Act in Genshin Impact Prologue Chapter Subtitle. This research aims to analyze subtitling strategy and the readability of directive speech act in video game Genshin Impact. The theories applied in conducting this research are subtitling strategies by Gottlieb (1992), translation quality assessment readability level by Nababan et, al. (2012), and Directive speech act theory by John Searle (1976). This research is conducted by using descriptive qualitative and quantitative method. The data of this research is 198 data of directive speech act that uttered by all of the characters in video game Genshin Impact prologue chapter. The result of this research for the type of directive speech act are 87 question type, 44 request type, 39 command type, 24 prohibition type, and 4 permission type. Furthermore, for the result of the subtitling strategies used are 45 paraphrase strategy, 40 transfer strategy, 33 imitation strategy, 23 expansion strategy, 21 condensation and transcription strategy, and 15 deletion strategy. Since this is a subtitle of a game, the most used strategy is paraphrase because in the subtitle, the translator needs to explain or elaborate what player have to do to play the game. Meanwhile for the result of the readability level, 182 data are considered readable and 16 data less readable. Therefore, with this high readability score, the translation is considered readable. As a suggestion, further similar research may apply different object and theory. Keywords: Translation, Subtitling Strategy, Directive Speech Act, Readability, Genshin Impact.
