Abstract
This research aims to determine the pragmatic approach concerning the conversations on the K-pop fan war between @Clowntasy07 and SF9 fans that deals with the study of the meanings communicated by senders and interpret by receivers. The use of context is essential in conducting the data to answer the research objectives. This qualitative descriptive research is conducted to examine the adjacency pairs by Schegloff and Sacks (1973) and language function by Halliday (2013) discovered in the K-pop fan war between @Clowntasy07 and SF9 fans on Twitter. Using purposive sampling, the data from @Clowntasy07’s tweets are taken from January 1, 2022, to June 6, 2022. The first result shows that according to adjacency pairs theory by Schegloff and Sacks (1973), only 6 out of 9 types were found from the data; assertions-agreement/disagreement is identified as the most frequently found (6 conversations or 60%), followed by question-answer (2 conversations or 13.3%) command-compliance/non-compliance (2 conversations or 13.3%), request-refusal (2 conversation or 13.3%), blame/accusation-admission/denial (2 conversation or 13.3%) and the last is offer-acceptance/refusal (1 conversation or 6.8%). Then, the second result shows that based on Halliday’s (2013) theory of language function, only 5 of 7 functions were found from the data; personal function was identified as the most commonly found (21 utterances or 53.8%), regulatory (9 utterances or 23.1%), representational (4 utterances or 10.3%), heuristic (3 utterances or 7.7%), and lastly imaginative (2 conversation or 5.1%). Thus, the agreement/disagreement pair is more significant than the other types of adjacency pairs as demonstrated by the fan wars between @Clowntasy07 and SF9 fans and personal language function is the most significant of the other language functions to expresses individual preferences, identity, feelings, emotions, and etc. Lastly, it is hoped that more researchers will examine the language use of social media users since the dynamics of their language are developing rapidly.
