Abstract

The Phenomenon of Swearing Using Sexual Slang and Its Motives in Love Wedding Repeat Movie. Thesis. Supervisor 1: Dr. ChusniHadiati, S.S., M.Hum. Ministry of Education, Culture, Research and Technology, Universitas Jenderal Soedirman, Faculty of Humanities, English epartment, EnglishLiterature Study Program, Purwokerto, 2022.The research entitled “The Phenomenon of Swearing Using Sexual Slang and ItsMotives in Love Wedding Repeat Movie” aims to determine the types of swearingbased on Pinker (2007) and the motives of swearing based on ndersson’s (1985),particularly using sexual slang. The data of this research were the conversationamong the characters that contains swearing especially using sexual slang uttered by the characters in Love Wedding Repeat movie. The escriptive qualitative method and purposive sampling to answer the researchquestion. The result of the analysis showed that emphatic swearing is the mostfrequently used of swearing type among the 45 data (17 data, or 39%), followed bydescriptive swearing (2 data, 2%), abusive wearing ( 2 data, or 2%), idiomaticswearing (11 data, or 24%), and cathartic swearing (13 data, or 29%). Besides, this research also analyzed the motives of swearing with sychological motives as themost frequently used swearing motive among the 45 data (18 data, or 40%),followed by the social motive (16 data, or 36%), and linguistic motive (11 data, or24%). Based on the result, the most frequently used swearing type is the catharticone which indicated that swearing was uttered when an unwanted situation orsomething bad happens suddenly, and psychological motives as the most frequentlyused because the characters in Love Wedding Repeat movie mostly used it to reduce their emotion or tension.
