Abstract

Wicaksani, Friska Nurmeida. British Society’s Perspective towards LGBTQ+ Communities in 1950s-1960s Portrayed in larryvgl’s Somebody to Love. Thesis. Supervisor 1:Lynda Susana Widya A.F., S.S., M.Hum., Supervisor 2: Muhammad Taufiqurrohman, S.S., M.Hum., External Examiner: Eni Nur Aeni, S.S., M.A. Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology, Jenderal Soedirman University, Faculty of Humanities, English Department, English Literature Study Program, Purwokerto. This research entitles “British Society’s Perspective towards LGBTQ+ Communities in 1950s-1960s Portrayed in larryvgl’s Somebody to Love”. It is aimed to figure out the LGBTQ+ communities situation in the 1950s-1960s in Britain through the portrayal of main character of Somebody to Love by larryvgl. Furthermore, this research is conducted by finding the similarities between the story and the history of LGBTQ+ in Britain. Thus, qualitative method is employed in this research for it is analyzing the perspective of British society in the 1950s-1960s using the description and interpretation of the story. The primary data comes from the object itself, Somebody to Love by larryvgl. The results of this research show that some similarities are found from gender and sexuality perspectives. In gender’s perspective, gender role becomes the main issue as depicted both in the story and the history; men are the superior one in the house and women become the inferior. However, the main characters of Somebody to Love are portrayed to be the gender norm’s breaker. Meanwhile from sexuality perspective, homophobia and heterosexism become the main issues. Discrimination towards LGBTQ+ communities are absolutely found in both the story and history of LGBTQ+ in Britain in the 1950s. Heterosexism often considered LGBTQ+ as sin, diseases, and a criminal acts that deserved to be put in jail. In conclusion, this research proves that Somebody to Love by larryvgl is surely portraying LGBTQ+ communities condition in Britain in the 1950s until 1960s.
