Abstract

This research aims to (1) find out linguistic speech features used by female and male speakers on The Oprah Winfrey show, (2) explain the functions of the features used, and (3) describe the differences in the use of linguistic speech features between female and male speakers on The Oprah Winfrey show. The method used in this research is qualitative method. Purposive sampling is applied to take the sample. The data of this research are utterances which contain linguistic speech features by one female speaker, Kristen Stewart, and one male speaker, Taylor Lautner The main theory of Robin Lakoff (1975) about women‟s language is used to analyze the data. The result shows that there are 43 data which contain 4 types of linguistic speech features found in the female speaker‟s utterances. These features are lexical hedges/fillers, rising intonation on declarative, intensifiers and emphatic stress. Meanwhile, there are 34 data which contain 6 types of linguistic speech features found in the male speaker‟s utterances. These features are lexical hedges/fillers, rising intonation on declaratives, empty adjectives, intensifiers, avoidance of strong swear words, and emphatic stress. The functions of these features are to reveal the speaker‟s insecurity and to emphasize the utterances. Then, the differences of linguistic speech features used by both speakers can be seen from the use frequency of the features. The researcher suggests for future researchers interested in the same field to pick one or some features to be examined in real mixed-gender conversation or they could also examine women‟s language or men‟s language only.
