Abstract

This research in entitled “Tupac Shakur’s Use of Thug Life a Counter Against Cultural Hegemony” The purpose of this research is to examine how rapper Tupac Shakur used the concept of thug life to challenge cultural hegemony. Drawing on Antonio Gramsci's theory of hegemony, this study explores how Tupac employed thug life as a narrative of opposition to dismantle the entrenched hegemonic system. The popularity of thug life as entertainment makes it intriguing to uncover deeper meanings. Qualitative methods were employed, analyzing Tupac's lyrics, interviews, and speeches to evaluate various aspects of thug life as a cultural resistance strategy. The research explains how cultural resistance can dismantle dominant narratives and promote alternative forms of identity and agency by examining Tupac's use of thug life. Findings indicate that Tupac utilized thug life to reclaim control and redefine the mythology surrounding urban environments. He aimed to debunk misconceptions and draw attention to the structural injustices experienced by marginalized groups through activism and his lyrics. With his call for social justice and messages of resilience in the face of adversity, thug life became a rallying cry. Based on the data, the author highlights how Tupac reinterpreted thug life beyond its derogatory connotations, transforming it into a metaphor for individual strength and group cooperation. This understanding was achieved by delving into the socio-political and historical contexts of Tupac and thug life.
