Abstract
This study investigates the hedges in the English-Indonesian subtitle of TV show Anne with an E Season 1 Episode 1 (2017). It aims to identify the classification of the hedges in SL and TL, and the subtitling strategies which the subtitler uses on achieving pragmatic equivalence. This study takes documentation on collecting the data and uses a descriptive qualitative method. In this study, the theory from Prince et al (1982) is applied to identify the classification of the hedges. Gottlieb’s (1992) theory is used to analyze the subtitling strategies. Furthermore, Coates’ (2004) and Hymes’ (1972) theories are used to determine the pragmatic equivalence accomplishment of each hedge translation. There are 3 types of hedges found in the subtitles with the most dominant one being plausibility shields because in this show, this type of hedge is not exclusively used by any certain character type or characterization. The usage of this type of hedge spreads evenly from male or female, to young or old characters because this hedge type tends to be used to indicate an expression of doubt and of avoiding to be perceived as too opinionated. In addition, there are 5 strategies used by the subtitler, and the most dominantly used was paraphrase. Paraphrase is used the most to retain the content and message of the hedges and to make it easier to understand for the audience despite the different commonly used syntactic structure of SL and TL. It is also used to avoid violating subtitles restrictions like duration and the amount of words in one line of subtitles. To analyze the pragmatic equivalence, the type and function of each hedge pair in SL and TL is compared and matched. The result shows that most of the data are fully equivalent, and there is a relation between the types of subtitling strategies employed and its pragmatic equivalence achievement. Some strategies like paraphrase and transfer are very suitable to translate hedges, whereas strategies like decimation and deletion tend to result in only partly or not achieved pragmatic equivalence.
