Abstract

This study aims to determine the types and functions of slang words on traveling Instagram accounts @indigo.traveller, @natgotravel, and @visitnorwich from January 2021 to March 2022. This study uses a qualitative descriptive method to analyze data by explaining the utterances contain slang to determine the types and functions of slang using Allan and Burridge's theory (2006). From the results of this study, 4 types of slang words were found on traveling Instagram accounts @indigo.traveller, @natgeotravel, and @visitnorwich with a total of 27 data, they are fresh and creative (12), imitative (3), acronym (8), and clippings (4). In addition, the researcher also found 5 slang functions from the total available data, they are to address (7), to humiliate (1), to initiate relax conversation (13), to express impression (6), and to reveal anger (2). From these findings, the type mostly used on the Instagram traveling accounts @indigo.traveller, @natgeotravel, and @visitnorwich is the fresh and creative type. This is because in informal conversation, especially in the traveling Instagram account, people using non-standard English. Therefore, using simple words will be more productive in casual conversation. The use of simple words makes the atmosphere more fluid. Apart from that, the most widely used slang function is the one to initiate relax conversation, for it is the function of using slang words in the conversation is essential, which is that people will use different language in different situations. In the context of informal conversation, slang words will find more often because using slang words in conversation makes the situation more relaxed. The conclusion is the correlation between the types and functions of slang words focus on the vocabulary pattern or structure of words formation. The types more focus on the grammatical patterns, while the functions focus on the variety of language use according to the function.
