Abstract
This research aims to explain information on mental health-related terms and to analyze the subtitling strategies on the mental health-related terms in the Euphoria drama TV series (2019). The theories applied in conducting this research are the ICD-10 Classification of Mental and Behavioural Disorders (1992), The Lexicon of Psychiatric and Mental Health Terms Second Edition (1992) by WHO Geneva, and the theory of subtitling strategies by Gottlieb (1992). Furthermore, to answer the research questions, the researcher uses the descriptive qualitative method. The data of this research are 39 mental health-related terms in Euphoria subtitle. Moreover, the findings of this research show that the subtitling strategies employed are 5 which consist of 67% transfer, 15% paraphrase, 10% imitation, 5% expansion, and 3% deletion. The transfer strategy is mainly used in the findings as all of the data is either mental disorders, the symptoms, or mental health-related cases that has been happening frequently in the TL country e.g., 3.7% of indonesian adolescent population diagnosed with anxiety disorders, 1.0% of major depressive disorder, and PTSD and ADHD both with 0.5% in 2020 according to I-NAMHS thus, making the Indonesian audience more familiar with the term that has been set in the TL. On the contrary, deletion is the least implemented strategy because most mental health-related terms are necessary to be delineated in the TL as the removal of some part can change the whole meaning e.g., "Drug addict" to pecandu in the TL, it is a polysemous word as it can be used to describe drug addict, nicotine addict, porn addict, etc. Without an explanation in the scene, it would give the viewers a restained comprehensive of the context. For suggestion, further similar research can apply other theories of mental health terms or subtitling strategies to analyse in-depth another mental health aspect that is yet uncovered in this research.
