Abstract
This research is aimed at finding out the types of tag questions and describing the reason why certain tag questions are used by children in novel The Boy in the Stripped Pajamas. This research used qualitative study in analyzing the data. The data source of this research is novel The Boy in the Stripped Pajamas written by John Boyne. The data were analyzed using theory of tag questions by Holmes. Later, the reasons why children use certain tag questions were explained by relating it to children language theory. The result of this research shows that there are 26 total children utterances which contain tag questions. The data are classified as follows: 11 data of epistemic tag, 9 data of challenging tag, 4 data of softening tag, and only 1 datum of facilitative tag. Out of those four types, epistemic tags are the most frequently used by children to show children’s uncertainty toward certain new information from other speaker. Challenging tags are used by children when they want to strengthen their utterance for getting certain information, and boosting negative speech act. Softening tags are used to soften criticism or directives, while facilitative tag is used to invite new speaker to join the conversation. In accordance with this research, psycholinguistics approach and error analysis of young children’s tag questions or in real life can be further developed.
