Abstract

This research aims to analyse the translation technique and readability level of the translated Automotive terms in Chevrolet Orlando user manual. The analysis is conducted by applying Molina and Albir's theory of translation techniques (2002) and Nababan's theory of Translation Quality Assessment (TQA) (2012). The data in this research amounts to 206 Automotive terms both in English and Indonesian version. In the process of conducting this research, The researcher used qualitative method and total sampling. The results of the questionnaire distributed to ten respondents were also taken into consideration in conducting this research. The results of this research show that there are 9 translation techniques found, there were 74 data (35.92%) using established equivalence, 54 data (26.21%) using borrowing, 29 data (14.08%) using literal translation, 21 data (10.19%) using particularization, 16 data (7.76%) using generalization, 7 data (3.40%) using amplification, 3 data (1.46%) using calque, 1 datum (0.49%) using reduction, and 1 datum (0.49%) using transposition. The dominant technique used is established equivalence. The technique is applied based on the frequency of the translation results that are equivalent to the dictionary and daily use in Indonesian users. Moreover, the readability level of the dominant data resulted in high readable totaling 184, Medium readable totaling 21 and low readable totaling only 1 datum. Established equivalence technique tends to produce many high readable translations, Then, the results leading to medium readable are caused by the use of translation techniques that are less accurate based on the context of the text, and low readable is caused by the less popularity of word usage in the translation results. The conclusion obtained is that translations based on equivalence produce translations that are easy to understand.
