Abstract
The "Karen" meme has garnered substantial popularity and growth, transforming from its initial conception into a widely recognized cultural trend. This meme commonly portrays a stereotype of an assertive, entitled, and confrontational individual, frequently associated with middle-aged white women, though it has been extended to apply to any individuals. This research delves into the semiotic analysis of the "Karen" meme on social media platform X, employing Ferdinand de Saussure's semiotic theory. The study categorizes "Karen" memes into three distinct types: whining, ignorant, and drama queen. Ferdinand de Saussure's theory of semiotics, focusing on the relationship between the signifier and the signified, serves as the theoretical framework to understand how these memes convey meaning. The study not only contributes to the understanding of semiotic processes in internet culture but also sheds light on how a single term can encompass diverse interpretations and judgments, reflecting broader societal attitudes. The findings emphasize the flexibility and richness of Saussure's theory in unraveling the complexities of contemporary online discourse, particularly in the context of meme culture.
