Abstract

The Perceptions of English Education Study Program Students Regarding the Importance of Mastering Public Speaking Skills for Pre-Service Teachers (A Descriptive-Qualitative Research on Students in The Academic Year of 2019/2020 English Education Study Program of Jenderal Soedirman University). Public speaking skills are vital for pre-service teachers to communicate clearly, manage classrooms effectively, and advocate for education reforms. The aims of this research are: (1) To analyze 2019/2020 English education students' perceptions of the importance of mastering public speaking for pre-service teachers. (2) To explore how these skills contribute to a teacher candidate's success. (3) To identify the challenges students face in developing public speaking skills in the English education study program. The study utilized a descriptive research design with a qualitative approach. The researcher employed purposive sampling to select 10 students from the 2020 batch of the English Education Study Program, focusing on their teaching candidates’ expertise. Observation checklist ensured samples met study criteria. The open questionnaire gathered detailed insights. Documentation included images of students completing questionnaires and references supporting student perceptions in Chapter 4. Data analysis followed Miles and Huberman's (2007) model, encompassing data collection, reduction, display, and conclusion stages. The study found that ten students, chosen based on the observation checklist, met the inclusion criteria, emphasizing active class participation, strong speaking skills, and accessibility to researchers. Their responses affirmed their suitability, underscoring the importance of public speaking for future educators. Key findings: (1) Mastering public speaking is crucial for teachers, as noted in surveys. (2) Students see it as vital for professionalism and effective teaching. (3) Challenges such as limited extracurricular opportunities must be addressed to better support future educators. Keterampilan berbicara di depan umum sangat penting bagi guru prajabatan untuk berkomunikasi dengan jelas, mengelola kelas secara efektif, dan mengadvokasi reformasi pendidikan. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah: (1) Untuk menganalisis persepsi mahasiswa pendidikan bahasa Inggris tahun ajaran 2019/2020 tentang pentingnya menguasai keterampilan berbicara di depan umum bagi calon guru. (2) Untuk mengeksplorasi bagaimana keterampilan ini berkontribusi terhadap kesuksesan calon guru. (3) Untuk mengidentifikasi tantangan yang dihadapi mahasiswa dalam mengembangkan keterampilan berbicara di depan umum di program studi pendidikan bahasa Inggris. Penelitian ini menggunakan desain penelitian deskriptif dengan pendekatan kualitatif. Peneliti menggunakan purposive sampling untuk memilih 10 mahasiswa dari Program Studi Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris angkatan 2020, dengan fokus pada keahlian calon guru. Daftar periksa observasi memastikan sampel memenuhi kriteria penelitian. Kuesioner terbuka mengumpulkan informasi yang lebih rinci. Dokumentasi termasuk gambar mahasiswa yang sedang mengisi kuesioner dan referensi yang mendukung persepsi mahasiswa di Bab 4. Analisis data mengikuti model Miles dan Huberman (2007), yang meliputi tahap pengumpulan, reduksi, penyajian, dan penarikan kesimpulan. Penelitian ini menemukan bahwa sepuluh siswa, yang dipilih berdasarkan daftar periksa observasi, memenuhi kriteria inklusi, yang menekankan pada partisipasi aktif di kelas, kemampuan berbicara yang kuat, dan aksesibilitas terhadap peneliti. Tanggapan mereka menegaskan kesesuaian mereka, menggarisbawahi pentingnya berbicara di depan umum bagi para pendidik di masa depan. Temuan utama: (1) Menguasai kemampuan berbicara di depan umum sangat penting bagi para guru, seperti yang dicatat dalam survei. (2) Siswa menganggapnya penting untuk profesionalisme dan pengajaran yang efektif. (3) Tantangan seperti terbatasnya kesempatan ekstrakurikuler harus diatasi untuk mendukung para pendidik masa depan dengan lebih baik.
