Abstract

This research examines the representation of multiculturalism in Valorant by analyzing the cultural diversity that is present in the storyline, characters, and settings which signifies the distinct culture of various regions, and then classifying it according to Parekh’s multicultural views. The multicultural concept is centred around cultural embeddedness, cultural diversity, and intercultural dialogue. Using a qualitative research method, the study compiles findings and groups them based on Bhikhu Parekh’s multicultural view by utilizing Cresswell’s analysis strategies. The findings of this research are as follows: Out of the 26 characters in Valorant, there are five characters who demonstrated signs of cultural embeddedness through the use of native languages and cultural expressions, namely Gekko, Jett, Skye, Sage, and Raze. In addition, there are five maps in Valorant inspired by culturally diverse real-world places that highlights its respective cultures through architectural design, traditions, and art such as Ascent, Bind, Lotus, Haven, and Sunset. The game also illustrates the potential outcomes of intercultural dialogue, such as equality and respect towards marginalized communities, along with shared identity or sense of belonging that encourages a multicultural way of life in a heterogenous community. Overall, the analysis emphasized that the concept of a multicultural society can be represented in video games such as Valorant by incorporating diverse cultural elements unique to the portrayed regions. This can contribute to increasing the representation of different communities and to promote a greater awareness of various global cultures in media.
