Ministry of Research, Technology and Higher Education, Jenderal Soedirman University, Faculty of Humanities, English Departement, English Literature Study Program, Purwokerto. This research is entitled “The Formula of Detective Stories in Doyle’s A Study in Scarlet and Christie’s The Mysterious Affair at Styles: A Comparative Study”. This research uses A Study in Scarlet written by Arthur Conan Doyle and The Mysterious Affair at Styles written by Agatha Christie as the research objects which generally tell about mysterious murder and detective who investigates the crime. The purpose of this research is to reveal the formula of detective story that depicted in A Study in Scarlet and The Mysterious Affair at Styles. The researcher uses comparative literature as an interdisciplinary to give a support for analyzing the works. This research is also supported by theory of formula of detective story proposed by Cawelti. To collect data in this research, the researcher used descriptive qualitative method which is proposed the interpretation presented in the descriptive form. The method of analyzing in this research is starting from reading both novels, finding out the formula of detective story in each work, analyzing the data using Cawelti’s theories, and concluding the result of analysis. The result of this research shows that there are four elements of detective story formula depicted in both novels. The first is situation. The second is pattern of action that are divided into six elements: introduction of the detective, crime and clue, investigation, announcement of the solution, explanation of the solution and denouement. The third is characters and relationships. The last is setting. In short, the analysis of this research is Doyle’s A Study in Scarlet and Christie’s The Mysterious Affair at Styles follow the four elements of formula detective story by Cawelti. In addition, beside of the focus of the research on formula of detective story, the researcher found a difference in both novels. The difference is in the depiction of detective character based on authors’ life experiences. In A Study in Scarlet, Holmes's character as a detective described as a people interested in science. This is a reflection of life of Conan Doyle as the author who has an experienced studied medicine at University of Edinburgh Medical School. On the contrary, in The Mysterious Affair at Styles Poirot as a detective describes as a person interested in psychology of human nature. This is a reflection of life of Agatha Christie as the author who likes to contribute to the social activities. It can be concluded that both detective character in both novels are different because it is influenced by authors’ personal experiences.
