Abstract

Background: Trauma is one of the leading causes of death and disability in society. The management of trauma patients in rural areas is often hindered by inadequate equipment. The Long Spine Board (LSB) is an essential tool for transporting trauma patients. However, the high cost, heavy weight, and excessive length of LSBs pose challenges for their recognition and use by rural communities. This study aims to find an alternative to LSBs that is more acceptable to the community without compromising the functional value of the LSB. Methods: This study employed a Research and Development (R&D) design with a prototype approach. The stages of this study included designing the device, producing prototype 1, conducting expert testing, developing prototype 2, conducting usability testing, and finalizing prototype 3. Results: Prototype 3 is the result of refinements made to prototypes 1 and 2. It has a weight of 8 kg, a load capacity of 102 kg, a total length of 180 cm, and a folded length of 90 cm. It can carry a load of 102 kg without deformation and has been validated by emergency and civil engineering experts, achieving a Content Validity Index (CVI) of 1 in most evaluation points. Usability testing also showed positive results with an overall usability percentage of 82.43%, ease of use at 84.16%, ease of learning at 88.02%, and user satisfaction at 87.06%. Conclusion: The PASPINALI prototype is a validated innovation that meets the expertise standards and addresses the needs of rural communities in trauma patient management. This device is not a competitor to the long spine board but serves as a substitute that provides the same functionality at a more affordable price, with more accessible material composition and dimensions.
