Abstract
Antibiotics are used extensively in agriculture, animal husbandry, and healthcare. Waste disposal from these fields can contain antibiotics residual which cause resistance toward exposed bacteria. Bacteria can be transferred by vectors such as cockroaches, these insects frequently live in unsanitary locations such as waste disposal facilities. German Cockroaches (Blattella germanica) are one species of cockroach linked to nosocomial bacteria. Several studies have shown German cockroaches are often found in hospital settings and carry resistant pathogenic bacteria. The World Health Organization (WHO) classifies antibiotics into three categories i.e. Access, Watched, and Reserved in order to maintain their effectiveness. These two groups of antibiotics are commonly used as the first-line and second-line treatment. Previous research found the presence of bacteria carried by German Cockroaches from hospital areas which the antibiotic resistance character has not been studied before. Therefore, this study aims to determine the antibiotic resistance character of bacteria originating from German cockroaches in hospital areas. This study was conducted at the Microbiology Laboratory, Faculty of Biology, Jenderal Soedirman University using a survey method. The study was carried out from August to December 2024. Antibiotic sensitivity tests on bacterial isolates from German cockroaches in the hospital area were conducted using the Kirby Bauer technique. Furthermore, the antibiotic sensitivity test results are analyzed by comparing them to the Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute (CLSI) To determine the resistant category. The characterization of resistant bacterial isolates according to phenetic characteristics is examined by referring to Bergey's Manual of Determinative Bacteriology. The results showed that 22 bacterial isolates of German cockroaches (Blattella germanica) from the hospital area are members of the genus Staphylococcus, Listeria, Lactobacillus, Enterococcus, and Streptococcus. The antibiotic sensitivity test resulted in 100% bacterial isolates resistant to Amoxicillin, 14% resistant to Erythromycin, and 5% resistant to Tetracycline. Isolates GMP 24 A, GMP 25 B, and GMP 25 G who are members of the Listeria and Staphylococcus genera displayed resistance properties to multiple types of antibiotics. Isolates GMP 24 A and GMP 25 B are resistant to both Amoxicillin and Erythromycin. Meanwhile, isolates GMP 25 G are resistant to 3 antibiotics i.e., Amoxicillin, Erythromycin, and Tetracycline
