Abstract

Pararuellia napifera, from the Acanthaceae family known for its rich secondary metabolites and therapeutic potential, is understudied regarding its specific compounds and applications. This research investigates the impact of different drying methods, sun drying, oven drying, and air drying on its secondary metabolite profile, aiming to identify the most effective preservation technique. Ethanol was used for extraction due to its broad solubility. The study employed qualitative tests to identify flavonoids, alkaloids, and polyphenols, and quantitative tests to determine their total content. Leaf morphology, color, size, and shape were also observed as supporting parameters. Results indicated the presence of polyphenols, alkaloids, and flavonoids across all drying methods. Sun drying yielded the highest amounts of polyphenols and flavonoids, while oven drying resulted in the highest alkaloid content. However, statistical analysis revealed no significant difference in the overall secondary metabolite content among the three drying methods. This research provides valuable insights for the pharmaceutical and herbal industries to optimize P. napifera processing methods for preserving its bioactive compounds.
