Abstract
Background: Adolescents with thalassemia often experience physical limitations and psychosocial challenges that can reduce their social interactions and negatively impact their quality of life. Therefore, it is important to examine the relationship between social interactions and quality of life among adolescents with thalassemia at Banyumas Regional General Hospital. Methods: This quantitative cross-sectional correlation study involved 51 adolescents with thalassemia using consecutive sampling techniques, using the RAND Social Health Battery and PedsQL 4.0 for data collection, and Somers' D for bivariate analysis. Results: Most respondents had high social interactions (51%) but poor quality of life (64.7%), especially in the school function domain (84.3% in the poor category). The bivariate analysis showed a negative but no significant correlation between social interaction and quality of life (d=-0.068; p=0.628). Conclusion: Most adolescents with thalassemia had high social interactions but poor quality of life, particularly in the physical, emotional, and school aspects. This study concluded that there was no significant relationship between social interaction and quality of life, so efforts to improve quality of life need to focus not only on social support but also on physical, emotional, and school functioning aspects.
