Abstract
This study took the title "Determinants of Poverty in North Sumatra Province 2011-2015". This study aims to determine the effect of human population, GDP per capita, government expenditure, unemployment and life expectancy partially and simultaneously affect the level of poverty in North Sumatra in 2011-2015. The analysis method in this study is using the panel data method or pooled least square with some criteria in the panel data, then the best model is the fixed effect. The results of the research are: (1) Population and GRDP per capita has sinificant negative affects, (2) government expenditure has significant and positive affect, (3)unemployment has negative and insignificant affect, (4) based on F test result, all the regression coefficients are simultaneously significant at the 5% significance level, (5) the coefficient of determination 2 (R ) indicates that the selection of variables is correct, because the R 2 produced 0.992 almost reaches 1. The implication of this research is first, in the effort to overcome the problem of poverty since the independent variables has a great affects toward poverty then the local government expected to provide a roles and policies to encourage the economic growth, utilize the large populations growth rate to decrease unemployment, and to be more critical and wise in managing the government ecxpenditure. Second, the local government should increase economic growth as an effort to reduce poverty and improve people's welfare by utilizing the large population growth and the allocation of government expenditure should be critical and well targeted.
