Abstract

This research is mainly concerned with the factors: students’ reluctance in speaking English. The purposes of this research are: (1) To find out the factors causing students’ reluctance in speaking English, (2) To identify the dominant factor causing students’ reluctance in speaking English, (3) To elaborate the process of the dominant factor that influences students’ reluctance in speaking English. The methodology of this research is mixed-method research (quantitative-qualitative) with an emphasis of narrative inquiry approach. The samples of this research were 30 students of 8A at SMP N 3 Purwokerto. The data were collected through questionnaire (quantitative) and interview (qualitative). The technique of data analysis was thematic analysis. The results of this research are: (1) there are three big factors causing students’ reluctance, including psychological factors (lack of confidence, fear of making mistake, lack of interest in speaking, having shyness and anxiety), linguistic factors (lack of English proficiency, vocabulary, pronunciation skill and grammar competence), and socio-cultural factors (English exposure, textbook difficulties, teacher’s conditioning, public threat, and culture of bullying.), (2) the dominant factor is linguistic factor; the dominant factor occurs when students’ linguistic competence is still low which influences students psychologically when they’re speaking; (3) it is also supported by their surrounding, and culture (socio-cultural factor).
