Abstract
This research entitled A Comparative Study of Personal Pronoun Choices In Inaugural Speech By Donald Trump and Halimah Yacob aims to analyze the meanings of personal pronoun (I, you, we, they) using the theory of Collins (1990) and to find out the stylistic functions of its personal pronoun applying the theory of Bramley (2001). The data of this research are the inaugural speech transcripts of both President which consist of 55 personal pronouns by Trump and 75 personal pronouns by Yacob. Thus, I use the descriptive qualitative method and total sampling technique to answer the research questions. The result shows that the meanings of personal pronoun in inaugural speeches are referred to; the speaker; the people; the audiences; the speaker and administration; the speaker and generic people; the speaker and specific people; previous administration; specific people; and things. Trump dominantly produces 26 personal pronouns to refer himself and Americans, while Yacob produces 40 personal pronouns in referring herself. Furthermore, 12 different stylistic functions of personal pronoun in two speeches are found; showing responsibility, highlighting quality, creating a unity, convincing people, conveying speaker's opinion, making a claim, criticizing previous politicians/administrations, stating a fact, shifting attention from the speaker, sharing responsibility, showing authority, and persuading the value. The majority is creating a unity's function which 58,2% dominantly used by Trump and 26,7% mostly used by Yacob. Those stylistic functions are interpreted by considering the status of speakers, the position of addressees, and the issue happened to know the background of the speakers in producing personal pronouns.
