Abstract

Rambutan seed (Nephelium lappaceum L.) and lemongrass leaves (Cymbopogon citratus) have the ability in lowering blood glucose level because of terpenoids, saponins, and tannins contain in rambutan seed (RS) and quercetin, kaempferol, and apigenin in lemongrass leaves (LG). Hypoglycemic effect of RS and LG can be measured by fasting blood glucose level (GDP) in diabetic model of white mice. The purpose of this study was to find out the effect of combination of RS and LG extracts on lowering blood glucose level of diabetic model of white mice. This study adapted pre and post test method with control group design. Thirty white mices were divided into 5 groups. The positive control group was the mice group treated with glibenclamide in the dosage of 0.45 mg / kg body weight, the negative control group, group 1 (500;0), group 2 (0;500), group 3 (250:250). GDP levels were measured on the first day and 21st day after administration. GDP levels were measured by GOD-PAP method. The average of post test GDP level in the positive control group was 115.4 ± 5.22 mg / dl while negative control was 439.4 ± 1.41 mg / dL, group 1, 2, and 3 were 124.5 ± 3.53 mg / dl, 134 ± 5.65 mg.dl, and 123 ± 2.82 mg/dL respectively. Post Hoc LSD Test showed that there was significant difference between positive and negative control, and between negative control with all groups data (p<0.05), but there was no significant differences between group 1 and 3 (p> 0.05). The combination of RS extract and LG extracts was capable in lowering blood glucose level in diabetic model of white mice, but was not more effective than RS extract.
