Abstract

This research aims to figure out the types and the functions of figure of speech and analyze how certain figures of speech through its function influence the readers to believe fake news reported by BuzzFeed. Perrine theory (1992:66) is applied in analyzing types of figure of speech while Effendy theory (2003:55 as cited in Nuris 2013:227) is applied in examining the function of figure of speech. The research used qualitative method. The data are retrieved from top ten fake news which are reported by BuzzFeed. The result of this research shows that there are 10 types of figure of speech found that consist of 10 hyperboles, 13 metaphors, 4 similes, 10 symbols, 2 synecdoches, and 1 datum of each irony, litotes, metonymy, paradox, and personification. The functions of figures of speech which are found are 25 to inform, 5 to educate, 10 to entertain, and 10 to influence. Certain figures of speech influence the readers to believe the fake news through three functions that consist of to inform (6), to entertain (5), and to influence (6). Based on the result, type of figure of speech which is mostly used is metaphor; while the dominant function is to inform; in addition, the influential functions which make the reader believe the fake news are to inform and to entertain function. Both to inform and to entertain have close number to the function of to influence.
