Abstract

The research entitled “Reference Cohesion Analysis in BBC News Article Text of Speech: Mitt Romney Slams Republican Front-Runner Donald Trump” aims to: (1) find the types of reference cohesion; (2) explain how those reference types reflect Mitt Romney’s political attitude. A descriptive qualitative method with total sampling technique was applied in this research. The samples of this research same as the population was all reference types found in the text of speech, they are personal reference, demonstrative reference, and comparative reference. To analyze the data, Discourse analysis approach and cohesion theory from Halliday Hassan were used. Cohesion theory by Halliday Hassan was used to identify the types of reference and to explain the use of those references. The result shows that there are 221 total data for references found in the text of speech Mitt Romney Slams Republican Front-Runner Donald Trump. Each datum represents 3 types of reference. The dominant data that are found in the text of speech are personal reference which total of data 124, second is demonstrative which total of data 66 and the last is comparative reference which total of data 31. First is personal reference as the dominant reference used by Mitt Romney to show authority, share responsibility, sharing opinions, feeling, and belief, showing involvement and criticize of others. Second is Demonstrative reference is used to show place and time and an activity or situation which is related to present and past-time. Third is comparative reference is used to compare a person and thing which are related to the issue in the speech. Furthermore, those reference types and its functions show the ways Mitt Romney used those references in deliver his speech. It reflects Mitt Romney’s political attitude that is aggressive and critical.
