Abstract

This study employs a quantitative explanatory approach using panel data regression to examine the determinants of banking efficiency in Indonesia. The research aims to analyze the effects of Non-Performing Loans (NPL), Bank Size, Good Corporate Governance (GCG), and Inflation, as well as the moderating role of inflation, on bank operational efficiency measured by the BOPO ratio. The study uses secondary data from IDX-listed banks during 2019–2023, consisting of 120 bank-year observations. Panel regression estimation is conducted using the Fixed Effect Model with robust standard errors to address heteroskedasticity and autocorrelation problems. The results show that NPL, Bank Size, and Inflation have a significant effect on bank efficiency, while GCG does not significantly affect efficiency. Furthermore, inflation does not moderate the relationships between NPL, Bank Size, or GCG and BOPO. These findings indicate that bank efficiency is primarily driven by credit risk, scale effects, and macroeconomic price dynamics rather than governance mechanisms or interaction effects between variables. The study concludes that improving credit quality, managing bank size, and strengthening responsiveness to inflationary conditions are essential for enhancing banking efficiency. Theoretically, the results contribute to the literature on bank efficiency by integrating intermediation theory with macroeconomic and risk perspectives. Practically, the findings imply the need to reinforce credit risk management, optimize scale efficiency, and formulate policies that maintain price stability. Future research is recommended to include broader governance indicators and longer observation periods to capture dynamic efficiency adjustments over time.
