Abstract

Cultural background differences between communities often cause challenges in translation, especially if a particular cultural element has no equivalent in the target language. To address this translation issue, this research analysed the Extralinguistic Cultural References (ECRs) translation, highlighting on the translation strategies and ideological tendencies based on the strategies applied. This research employed a descriptive qualitative approach. The data consist of words and phrases identified as ECRs in the official English and Indonesian subtitles of Música on the Amazon Prime Video, collected through audiovisual and digital materials as well as document analysis. The data analysis was conducted using domain analysis, taxonomic analysis, componential analysis, and cultural theme analysis to examine the ECR domains, translation strategies, and translation ideology. The findings indicate that there are eight identified ECR domains, which are proper names, technical material, other, food and beverages, entertainment, weights and measures, professional titles, and currency, with proper names being the most dominant. It was also revealed that almost all of the strategies, including retention, official equivalent, generalization, omission, direct translation, and substitution, were applied in the translation, with retention as the most frequently applied strategy. The high frequency of retention suggests that the translation ideology of ECRs translation in Música was oriented towards foreignization.
