Abstract

This study delves into the issue of internalized oppression through the character of Remmick, an Irish vampire, in the film Sinners (2025) directed by Ryan Coogler. It is a qualitative research that uses Fanon’s postcolonialism to understand the ongoing legacy of colonialism and Freire’s internalized oppression to serve as a detailed framework over the discourse that oppression is inevitably internalized. These two main theories are utilized to scrutinize how internalized oppression is depicted by Remmick in the movie. The result exhibits that Remmick’s transformation from a victim of the lasting systemic oppression of his own people by the British into an oppressor, whose instinct is to change everyone into vampires alike, is prompted by his frustration and desperation to reconnect with his severed heritage due to colonialism. He mirrors what his oppressor has exercised towards his own people, i.e., forces assimilation under the illusion of “civilizing,” and practices it towards other marginalized groups for his own ends; or in other words, internalizing it. It is, therefore, his endeavor of rehumanization as a being of praxis after constantly being dehumanized.
