Abstract

Adult colonization is the domination of adult over children, especially in literary work. This colonization happens when the work of children story is dominated by adult author. In this kind of work, adult can say and interpret everything about children and children’s world, including imposing value to them. On the other hand, it is silence to the children’s voice. Consequently, children are put as the inferior to the adult. Colonization to children is often overlooked. One of popular children stories that contain the colonization from adult is Jan Payne’s My Treasury of Aesop Fables (2015). In analyzing adult colonization within the fables, this research uses postcolonialism in children literature theory and intrinsic elements theory. There are five intrinsic elements analyzed by the researcher; these are theme, plot, point of view, character and characterization and symbolism. This research uses qualitative method in describing the finding. The research found out that through elements of literature, adult imposes their ideal value to children while at the same time it is silence to the issue that does not conform to their representation of ideal children. This imposition is in order to create ideal children, those who abide, obey, faithful, and innocence. Children are treated as the other, those who are inferior, inappropriate, exotic, uncanny, and uneducated. At the same time, it puts adult as the counterpart of the other, the self that is superior and full of knowledge.
