Abstract

This research entitled The Subtitle Strategies of Imperative Forms and Their Accuracy in Aladdin Movie. This research aims to analyze subtitling strategies and the accuracy of translation of imperative forms in Aladdin Movie. The theories applied in conducting this research are subtitling strategies by Gottlieb (1992), level of translation accuracy assessment by Nababan et al. (2012), and type of imperative utterances by Swan (1995). The research is conducted by using descriptive qualitative method. The data of this research are 107 imperative forms uttered by Jasmine, Aladdin, and Genie as the main characters from Aladdin Movie and their subtitle in Indonesia. The result of this research for the types of imperative forms are 82 affirmative imperative, 10 negative imperative, 8 subject with imperative, and 7 ‘let’ form. Furthermore, the result of subtitling strategies are 59 transfer strategy, 15 paraphrase strategy, 11 imitation strategy, 9 expansion strategy, 7 deletion strategy, 5 condensation strategy, and 1 decimation strategy. Transfer strategy dominates the findings since its simple characteristics. Meanwhile, the result for accuracy of translation are 84 accurate, 20 less accurate, and 3 inaccurate translation. Therefore, the translation product is generally considered as accurate translation. As a suggestion, further similar research can apply different interesting object and other theory of quality translation assessment.
