Abstract

The title of this practical work report is Translating Stephen Hancock’s and Evan Muir’s Scientific Horror Short Film “SCP: Overlord” from English to Indonesian. This practical work started in August 2021. Because this film has a unique, interesting, intriguing, and well-packaged concept, this practical work aimed to produce an Indonesian translation, to describe the process and obstacles, and to find solutions in translating the film SCP: Overlord. In writing the practical work report, it used two methods, namely literature study and direct practice. In the translation process of this film, it used four stages, such as the analysis stage, the transfer stage, the restructuring stage, and the evaluation stage. In addition, several translation techniques that have been used are Borrowing, Established Equivalent, Literal Translation, Discursive Creation, and Modulation. In the process of translating the short film SCP: Overlord, several obstacles were found, such as the lack of mastery of vocabulary in the source and target languages, the difficulty of finding equivalent words in the target language because there were many military terms that ordinary people rarely knew, the difficulty of synchronizing dialogue using the Aegisub application, and the translation results still looked stiff because of the source language influenced it. The solutions that have been carried out in overcoming these obstacles were finding out words in the source language that are difficult to understand with the help of online and offline dictionaries, trying to listen while watching a specific part of the film repeatedly until the dialogue sync with the film and then consulting the supervisors about the equivalent diction in the target language. This practical work report concluded that the translation of the film SCP: Overlord will be beneficial to Indonesian audiences in enjoying the film without experiencing difficulties due to language differences. In addition to gaining a significant number of new vocabulary, the writer got additional translation experience as a result of this practical work, which was obtained from the lecture materials studied thus far.
