Abstract
The research entitled Gottlieb’s Subtitling Strategies And Readability Of The Punchlines In Dave Chappelle’s Stand-Up Comedy Show Entitled Sticks & Stonesis aimed to discover the types subtitling strategies that are used by the translator in terms of translating the punchlines and to find out the readability level of the translation. The result of this translation can be readable or unreadable by the audience. The research conducted by using descriptive qualitative method. Purposive sampling technique applied to determine the samples. The data of this research are the punchlines that used subtitling strategies proposed by Gottlieb in 1992. In collecting the required data, several steps were required, they were: downloading and watching stand-up comedy show entitled "Sticks & Stones”, identifying the punchlines, noting the punchlines and its translation. To get the results of the assessment in the readability test, ten respondents were involved to assess the results of the punchlines translation into three categories, they are: high readability, medium readability and low readability. The result shows that the translator uses five out of ten subtitling strategies proposed by Gottlieb. Those subtitling strategies are 17.95% of Paraphrase; 53.85% of Transfer; 2.56% of Imitation; 7.26% of Condensation; 18.38% of Deletion. With this result, the translator applies subtitling strategies based on the differences that exist in the source language and target language, with transfer strategy as the most frequently applied strategy because the punchlines in "Sticks & Stones" have a simple language structure. Other strategies are applied depending on language differences which if translated literally has an inaccurate meaning. Meanwhile, from the result of readability test which conducted by 10 respondents, can be concluded that the translation of the punchlines in “Sticks & Stones” categorized as very readable translation. The calculation of score for whole datum is 105, with the distribution; 95 (90.48%) high readability data, 8 (7.62%) data are medium readability data, and 2 (1.90%) data are categorized as low readability translation. From these results, it can be concluded that the translation of the punchlines in "Sticks & Stones" is a translation that has a high level of readability, but there are some translations that are difficult to understand and there are also some translations that are completely unintelligible by the respondents.
