Abstract

The job training was done to translate short movie entitled “UBAG-UBEG” under the report “Translating Ravacana Films’ Javanese Short Movie Subtitile Entitled “UBAG-UBEG” (from Indonesian to English)”. The job training was implemented between June 4th and July 2nd, 2021 as one of the requirements to finish the study in English Diploma Program, Jenderal Soedirman University. The purposes of the job training are to translate the short movie subtitle from Indonesian to English, to describe the processes and techniques of translation used, to describe the obstacle while translating the short movie subtitle, and to describe the solutions to the obstacles in translating the short movie subtitile. In writing this report, the method used are literature study and direct practice. Those are used in order to collect the data in writing this report. The short movie is Javanese spoken movie which tells about a good deed that is misunderstood as a bad deed, but it still obtains good result as long as we explain the misunderstanding. The reason of choosing of the short movie as the translation object is to introduce Javanese language—as a part of cultures—to people who are willing to know and learn about Javanese language. There are three stages of processes in translating the short movie subtitle in this report—analysis, transfer, and restructure. Moreover, during the process of translating the short movie, the translation techniques used were literal translation, linguistic compression, amplification, adaptation, calque, borrowing, modulation, and compensation. The obstacles found in the process of translating the short movie are the lack of mastering target language vocabulary and the tendency of the use of the Indonesian language. Then, the solutions are understanding and finding the meaning of the source language vocabulary using the help of dictionary—whether online or offline, reading references and receiving help from supervisors and a proofreader to have a better and equivalent translation result.
