Abstract

This research aims to know the implementation online learning in teaching writing in the eighth grade as well as the supporting and impeding factors happened during the implementation of online learning. The implementation follows the e-tivities stages from Gilly Salmon theory; Access and Motivation, Online Socialization, Information Exchange, Knowledge Construction, and Development. The method of this research is explorative research which described in qualitative data. The subject of this research is English teachers in the eighth grade of SMP 4 Purwokerto in the academic year of 2020/2021. The number of population is 2 teachers. This research uses total sampling. The data were collected from observation and interview. Based on the data collected, both two teachers kept carrying out all the learning stages from opening to closing, even though it has done virtually by sending the messages through group chat. They had the same procedure in way of teaching process. They use the same tools; Whatsapp Group as the main tool for communication and sharing the links, using the same link (in Microsoft Sway) for the main material discussed. For the performance, both two teachers had values that were not much different. The first teacher (R1-MI) got 87,5% and the second teacher (R2-ENZ) got 85,7%. Their value represented “Good” in performance. From the e-tivities based on Gilly Salmon’s theory, the R1 (MI) did all the stages from Access and Motivation to Development completely, while the R2 (ENZ) did all the stages incompletely especially on part of Arriving in Access and Motivation. Then for the impeding factors faced by the teachers are the unstable connection, unsupported device, other online platform distractions used by the students –game, and limited quota that the students had. For the supporting factors are the quota subsidy and additional source and interesting media delivered by the teachers.
