Abstract

This research aims to describe environmental conservation through indigenous perspective reflected in The Old Man Who Read Love Stories, a novel by Louis Sepulveda. Written in 1989, Native Americans’ knowledge and practices are scrupulously presented in the novel. Their traditional perspective, values, and beliefs are then applied to manage the natural resources available in their surroundings. Accordingly, Ecocriticism theory is used to this research because it studies the relationship between literature and the bio-physical world. Moreover, to achieve the main purpose of this research, Kincentric Ecology theory is employed in order to disclose the strong connections and relations between indigenous peoples and the natural world. This research applies a qualitative method to analyze the data. In conducting this study, the primary data are taken from a novel entitled The Old Man Who Read Love Stories. Meanwhile, the secondary data rely on articles, journals, books, and online sources. The result of this research reveals that environmental conservations through indigenous perspective are reflected in indigenous land management, indigenous sustainable hunting, and indigenous forest plants utilizations. Furthermore, this research also discovers that indigenous peoples’ perspective, practice, and values ensure the sustainability of the biodiversity, enhance the ecosystem, and conserve the rainforest. In other words, native peoples’ traditional perspective and knowledge influence valuable effects on the environment. Based on the result of this research, it suggests that indigenous peoples’ perspective can be a significant contributor to environmental conservation.
