Abstract

This final report is entitled “Translating Sarah Pinsker’s Short Story “Two Truths and A Lie”. The job training activity was conducted in 1st until 31th May 2021 with the purposes to translate Sarah Pinsker's short story “Two Truths And A Lie” from English to Indonesian and to apply the translation theories that have been learned during the study. “Two Truths and A Lie” is a story by Sarah Pinsker that was published in 2020. This short story won the Nebula Award for Best Novelette in 2021. The setting of this story is 1980s and the present. This short story tells of a girl whose life is filled with lies that she tells spontaneously. The message conveyed in this story is about honesty. There are two methods used in the job training report, namely the literature study and direct practice. In the literature study, books, internet, and journals were used to get information and to help translation process. In the direct practice meyhod there are four techniques to be used: modulation, amplification, borrowing, description, reduction, literal, variation, adaptation, and transposition. The steps used in the translation process are analysis, transfer, and restructuring.There are several obstacles that were found in job training activity, such as lack of mastery in English, finding foreign terms, and finding proverbs and terms that were difficult to understand due to cultural differences. However, there are solutions that can overcome these obstacles, such as learning and searching parallel terms through dictionaries and the internet. The other solutions are studying the culture of the source language and looking for references to find sentences that have the same meaning to be used in the target language.
