Abstract

The objectives of this research are to identify and classify the types of speech acts used by the subjects Haytham Kenway and Connor Kenway and to determine their characterization based on the speech acts that they produced in the Assassins Creed III video game. This research uses the utterance produced by Haytham Kenway and Connor Kenway as the data. In addition, this research used qualitative-quantitative method to answer the research question of this thesis. After the analysis of data, it is found that there are 962 utterances produced, a combination of 461 speech acts from Haytham Kenway and 501 speech acts produced by Connor Kenway. Haytham Kenway produced 173 (37.53%) representative speech acts, 169 (36.66%) directive speech acts, 90 (19.52%) expressive speech acts, 26 (5.64%) commissive speech acts, and 3 (0.65%) declarative speech acts. On the other hand, Connor Kenway produced 189 (37.72%) directive speech acts, 168 (33.53%) representative speech acts, 86 (17.17%) expressive speech acts, 58 (11.58%) commissive speech acts, and no declarative speech acts. Based on the findings, it can be concluded that Haytham Kenway is a charismatic leader who is willing to use his position to achieve his objectives. He also has good mannerism, likes to be in control of situation, gifted and good in commanding his men, like to give orders, willing to learn from those who knows better than him, and avoid unnecessary violence if possible. Haytham Kenway is also very confident, wise, resourceful, possess keen eyes and sharp mind, and committed to his cause. On the other hand, Connor Kenway is young and lack the wisdom and experience, thus is easily surprised and confused of new things. However, he is also kind, willing to apologize when proven wrong, hardworking, smart, inquisitive, and willing to study and learn new things. Connor Kenway also possess the gift in commanding, polite, confident, possess sharp eyes and keen mind, and is quite resourceful for his young age. Furthermore, he is also committed to his cause and is willing to help those in need. Based on this research, we could see that speech acts phenomenon that appeared in many type of entertainment that contain story could also be used to determine the characterization of the characters that appear in those source. Thus this type of research may be applied to various types of sources such as novels, films, short stories, etc.
