Abstract

This research is entitled “An Analysis of Directive Illocutionary Acts in Maleficent: Mistress of Evil movie.” This study aims to understand utterances, especially directive illocutionary acts, between the participants by considering the context and situation in Maleficent: Mistress of Evil movie.This research is qualitative descriptive research that uses Yule’s and Hymes’ theory. Yule’s theory performs directive illocutionary acts, which are used by the speaker to get the hearer to do something. The ability to understand the reaction is also determined by the context; hence Hymes's theory of ‘SPEAKING’ is also important to this study. The subjects of this research are the utterances produced by Maleficent as the main character, especially the directive illocutionary acts, using purposive sampling. The systemization step of this research is analyzing them using Yule and Hymes theory which are deeply observing, collecting data, and also making table in a form of appendix.The result of this research shows that the utterance produced by Maleficent using directive illocutionary acts have fourteen total data with 5 (36%) datum belong to command, 1 (7%) datum belong to request, 1 (7%) datum belong to suggestion, and 7 (50%) datum belong to prohibition. Furthermore, the researcher finds that based on Hymes ‘SPEAKING’ theory, commands are found when the utterances have a context of public and private Setting, lower or higher positions of participants, general and personal End, lower and rising Tone. Request typically occur in private places, where Participants have lower and higher positions. In addition, Personal End occurs with lower Tone. Suggestion was also found in public places, where Participants have lower position. In addition, the general End occurs with a rising tone, and rising tone. In contrast, prohibition occurs in public places, where Participants have lower and higher positions. In addition, personal Ends occur with a rising tone, also occurs with a rising tone. Hence, this research indicates how essential the context towards the acts. When using the SPEAKING model, the unit of analysis is a speech event, and Maleficent is one character that holds the main speech events and binds all the characters in the movie; besides, she belongs to the one that holds all the power, the most active character, and the ruler of all.
