Abstract

This research entitled “American Parenting Style as Depicted in Ben Cash, the Main Character of Captain Fantastic Movie (2016) was aimed to analyse parenting styles and their backgrounds that the main character did in the movie. This research used qualitative method to analyse the data. The primary data was the movie, Captain Fantastic (2016), directed by Matt Ross. Psychology of literature theory especially Skinner’s Psychology of Behaviour theory was used as the main theory. Furthermore, parenting style theory, factors influencing parenting styles theory, and cinematography theory were used as the supporting theories. The result of this research showed that in Captain Fantastic movie, Ben Cash practiced authoritarian and authoritative parenting styles. The authoritarian parenting style was marked with Ben’s high behavioral control and high psychological control. Later, this parenting resulted in his children’s negative behaviors such as having low self-confidence, explosive tempered, and rebellion. Meanwhile, the authoritative parenting style was marked with Ben’s high level of affection, two-way communication, family discussion, and expectations as well as clear rules for his children’s good behaviors. Moreover, this parenting resulted in the children’s positive behaviors such as being creative, curious, and capable in education. These two parenting styles were influenced by parents’ personality traits, socioeconomic status (SES), culture, and belief.
