Abstract

The research entitled “The Reason Why Stevie Experience Bulimia Nervosa in Haston’s Paperweight (2015)” aims to find out the causal factors of bulimia nervosa in Stevie as the main character of Paperweight by Meg Haston. In conducting this research, the researcher applied qualitative method to analyze the data. This research used novel entitled Paperweight by Meg Haston, books, journals, articles, and online references related to psychology of literature theory, bulimia nervosa, and causal factors of bulimia nervosa as the data. To analyze the data, this research applied psychology in literature as the grand theory. Then, to support this research, the researcher also employed bulimia nervosa theory and causal factor of bulimia nervosa by Myra Cooper that divided into two parts: internal and external factors. The result of this study shows that Stevie's internal factors are low self-esteem, depression, and impulsive behavior. It is because she cannot deal with her life problems that is about her mother abandonment so Stevie has negative assumptions. Then, Stevie's external factors come from her family (parental food control, dysfunctional family) and social support (lack of friendship support). In the family section, Stevie's mother has strict rules about food and poor communication with her parents after her mother left Stevie and her family for an affair, while in social support, Stevie has no support from her friend. Both of internal and external factors are interrelated, causing Stevie to experience bulimia nervosa.
