Abstract

This Job Training Report entitled “Translating Neon Yang's Short Story “Circus Girl, The Hunter, and Mirror Boy” (From English to Indonesian) is a Final Project for English Diploma Program student in the field of translation, compiled based on the result of job training on 31 May 2021 – 27 June 2021. The purposes of this job training are to translate a short story entitled “Circus Girl, The Hunter, and Mirror Boy”, to explain the translation process and the techniques used to translate the text, and to explain the obstacles when translating the text and the solutions used to overcome the obstacles. The translation of this short story consists of several steps; they were: analyzing the text by reading the entire short story text, translating the contents of the text by finding the right equivalent in the target language, and arranging the text with words that have been found the equivalent in the target language. The translation techniques used in this job training were Borrowing, Description, Substitution, Reduction, and Amplification. During the job training, the obstacles faced were the difficulty of finding equivalent words and sentences in the target language due to lack of vocabulary mastery, the difficulty of assembling words into coherent sentences in the target language, and the difficulty of determining the translation technique used to translate the text. To overcome the obstacles, the solutions were: finding the right word equivalent in dictionaries and internet, looking for a proofreader to correct the transcript, consulting the job training result with the supervisor, and looking for references about translation techniques.
