Abstract

This study investigates the subtitling strategy and its acceptability of cultural terms in Nas Daily subtitles. The theories applied are cultural categories by Newmark (1988), subtitling strategy by Pedersen (2011), and acceptability parameter by Nababan, et al (2012). The research data are 58 cultural terms mentioned in Nas’ videos uploaded from March 2019 to August 2021. Furthermore, the researcher applied the descriptive qualitative method to answer the research questions. The question raters' questionnaire answers are also taken into consideration in this study. Then, the result shows that there are four categories of cultural terms; they are ecology (5.2%), material culture (39.7%), social culture (13.8%), and organization, custom, activities, products, and concept (41.4%). Organization, custom, activities, products, and concept category is dominantly mentioned because when discussing identity, the first thing in mind is the way the people see the world embodied in their ideas and concept. As for subtitling strategies, the results are retention (67.2%), specification (8.6%), direct translation (15.5%), generalization (3.5%), substitution (3.5%), and omission (1.7%). Retention strategy dominates the findings for the lack of equivalent terms in the TT to change the ST-terms and the urge of the translator to retain the foreignness sense to the TT viewers. Furthermore, the acceptability assessment shows that most subtitles are acceptable by 84.5%, and 15.5% of the data are less acceptable. For further research, other researchers are expected to investigate the other type of audio-visual translation, which is revoicing or dubbing.
