Abstract
This research is entitled “Category Shift in English into Indonesian Subtitles of Hudson & Rex Flare of the Dog”. It focuses on the implementation of translation category shift dan its readability on English into Indonesian subtitles of Hudson & Rex Flare of the Dog. This research aims at finding the category shift on English into Indonesian subtitles in Hudson & Rex episode Flare of the Dog based on Catford’s theory (1965) about category shift and identifying the level of readability on Flare of the Dog episode English into Indonesian subtitles based on Nababan, Nuraeni, and Sumardino (2012) model about translation quality assessment. This research employs descriptive-qualitative as the basic method and the data in this study is the subtitle of Hudson & Rex Season 2 Episode 16, Flare of the Dog that aired on AXN Asia channel from November 23rd to November 31st, 2021. This study shows that: first, the most frequently found type of category shift on Hudson & Rex Flare of the Dog subtitles is Unit Shift from total data of 350 shifts, where the Unit Shift with 142 data (40,57%), Structure Shift 98 data (28%), Intra-System Shift 90 data (25,71%), and Class Shift 20 data (5,72%). The reason why Unit Shift have the highest percentages because the differences of grammar system and linguistic hierarchy on both languages. Second, the readability level of the subtitles is mostly high readability where they are mostly translated by the highest three types of Category Shift which are Unit Shift, Structure Shift, and Intra-System Shift. The conclusion states that all types of Category Shift that are applied in Hudson & Rex Flare of the Dog subtitles does affect the degree of readability in target language, which by applying shifts in the translation process, the text becomes more natural thus it will have high readability in the target language.
