Abstract

The job training was done to translate a short movie entitled “DOLAN KUTHA” under the report “Translating The Subtitle of a Javanese Short Movie by Paniradya Kaistimewaan Entitled “DOLAN KUTHA”. The purposes of the job training were to translate the short movie subtitle from Indonesian to English, to describe the processes and techniques of translation used, to describe the obstacle while translating the short movie subtitle, and to describe the solutions to the obstacles in translating the short movie subtitle. The method used in writing this report is literature study and hands-on practice. A literature study is carried out by collecting the necessary documents as information material according to the topic of the report, while direct practice is to apply translation processes and techniques. The process of translating the subtitle of the short film is carried out through four stages, namely analysis, transfer, restructuring, and evaluation. The translation techniques used are adaptation, calque, amplification, transposition, borrowing, generalization, and variation. The dialogue in this film is in Javanese, therefore there are many obstacles in the translation process, such as a lack of understanding of sentences/vocabulary, errors in meaning from the source language to the target language, and difficulty finding the right words in the target language for conveying messages from the source language. The solution is to read and look up the meaning of words through offline and online dictionaries and then applied them to the difficult sentences/vocabularies, analyzing every detail of the words spoken by the speaker so that there is no misunderstanding and consulting with the supervisor and proofreader.
