Abstract
This study examines the use of aho expressions in Kansai dialect in the Detective Conan anime from 2008 to 2021 which aims to describe the meaning and function of aho expressions that appear in the data source. The scope of the research is the field of sociolinguistics. The theories used to analyse the data are semantics (Hiejima, 1991), aho expressions (Matsumoto, 1993), context theory (Hymes, 2010) and swear word theory (Wijana and Rohmadi, 2013). This research is a descriptive qualitative research with data analysis method using extralingual equivalent method. Data validation was conducted using data source triangulation technique on 2 (two) native speakers. The data found were 25 (twenty-five) data in the form of fragments of conversations between characters containing aho expressions in Kansai dialect. The results of this study found 4 (four) meanings of aho that appear in the data source, including: 1) baka with the function of expressing angry emotions; 2) ochame 'innocent' with the function: a) an expression of embarrassment and, b) an expression of surprised; 3) ukkarisan 'careless' with functions: a) an expression of sarcasm, b) an expression of disgust, c) an expression of familiarity, d) an expression of surprised, and e) an expression of astonishment; and 4) noutenki 'blunt' with the function of: a) expression of astonishment, b) expression of disgust, c) expression of sarcasm, and d) expression of annoyance. Based on the results of the study, it can be concluded that the most commonly found aho expression means ukkarisan a total of 9 data functions to express sarcasm which used by using low intonation, express disgust is used by using low and flat intonation, express familiarity by breaking the sad or tense atmosphere, express surprise because speaker gets a response that is beyond the speaker's expectations, and express astonishment that used by using high intonation and showing a confused look on the face.
