Abstract

ABSTRACT Candrawulan, Dewi. 2023. Translation Strategies and Singability of Indonesian Dubbed Soundtrack in We Bare Bears Animated TV Series. Thesis. English Literature Study Program. English Department. Faculty of Humanities. Jenderal Soedirman University. Purwokerto. Supervisor 1: Dyah Raina Purwaningsih, S.S., M.Hum. Supervisor 2: Hanifa Pascarina, S.S., M.Hum. External Examiner: Asrofin Nur Kholifah, S.S., M.Hum. Keywords: Translation Studies, Translation Microstrategy, Singability of The Song Translation, Dubbing, Audio-Visual Translation. This research concerns on the implementation of translation strategies and how those strategies could lead to singability of the song translation. The aims of this research are to analyze the strategies applied in translating a dubbed song and to explore singability of the song translation in a dubbed song. The theories applied in conducting this research are the translation microstrategy by Schjoldager, et al (2008) and a merged model of singability proposed by Khoshaligheh and Ameri (2016) which is a merging from two models, that are Low’s Pentathlon Principles (2003) and Franzon’s Layers of Singability (2008). Additionally, the pre-existing music as characteristic of singability will be included and lip-synchronization as an essential component in dubbing will also be taken into account in this analysis. The data of this research is a soundtrack consisting of 15 pairs of lines in both English and Indonesian version from We Bare Bears Animated TV Series. To answer and explain the research questions, the researcher employs descriptive qualitative method. Conforming to the result of the analysis, the pre-existing music aspects are all preserved in the translation which indicates that the translated soundtrack has the characteristic of singability where the music’s structure is kept original. Then, most aspects of singability are achieved; they are prosodic match, sense, and naturalness that are achieved in all 15 lines while poetic and semantic reflexive match are achieved in total of 14 lines. Furthermore, there are seven translation microstrategies implemented in all the data. The most frequently used translation microstrategies are condensation with six times implementation in translating the whole soundtrack followed by deletion with four times implementation in translating the whole soundtrack. The implementation of these two most frequent translation microstrategies reinforce that there is an effort to strive producing the same syllable count as in the original version in which the lengthy translation is condensed and some items are deleted to achieve corresponding syllable count and to not devastate the rhythm pattern.
