Supervisor 1: Dian Adiarti, S.Pd., M.Hum., Supervisor 2: Erna Wardani, S.Pd., M.Hum., External Examiner: Drs. Ashari, M.Pd., Ministry of Research and Higher Education Technology, Jenderal Soedirman University, Faculty of Humanity, Department of Language Education, English Education Study Program, Purwokerto. Teaching strategy is the way of achieving something in the teaching process. There are some problems found within English classrooms in SMP N 5 Purbalingga which are students’ lack of grammar, vocabulary, and pronunciation understanding, teachers’ lack of time needed to teach, and problems related to classroom equipment. This research focus is the strategies used by teachers and how students perceive their teachers’ strategies during teaching. For the research questions, the researcher formulates the problem statement as follows: First, what are teachers’ strategies in teaching reading and listening comprehension at SMP N 5 Purbalingga? Second, how do the teachers apply the strategies in teaching reading and listening comprehension at SMP N 5 Purbalingga? As for the research objectives, the researcher formulates the research objectives as follows: First, to find out teachers’ strategies in teaching reading and listening comprehension at SMP N 5 Purbalingga. Second, to find out teachers’ strategy applications in teaching reading and listening comprehension at SMP N 5 Purbalingga. In this research, the researcher used Observation and Interviews to gather the data required for the research. The results obtained from the research show that teachers from SMP N 5 Purbalingga used several strategies for both reading and listening comprehension are: Monitoring Comprehension, Metacognition, Graphic and Semantic Organizers, Answering Questions, Generating Questions, Recognizing Story Structure, Summarizing, Bottom-up Processing, Top-down Processing, and Interactive Processing. Based on the results of the research, the researcher suggests that this research can be used as a reference to conduct another research in the same field.
