Abstract

This research entitled “Johannes Betzler’s Obsessive Love Portrayed in Caging Skies (2004)”. The aim of this research is to discuss the portrayal of Johannes Ewald Detlef Betzler’s obsessive love in the Caging Skies (2004). The researcher used a qualitative descriptive method in analysing the data. The data of this research is obtained from the dialogues and narratives from Christine Leunens’ novel entitled Caging Skies (2004). Family communication pattern theory and attachment theory are used to examine the topic of this research. This research found that based on family communication pattern theory and attachment theory, the aspects that triggered Johannes’ obsessive love are his protective family type and his ambivalent attachment style with his parents. After found out the triggering aspects, Johannes’ acts of obsessive love can be seen from his behaviours and psychological control over Elsa. Johannes’ behaviours that showed his obsessive love are overwhelming attraction for the love interest, crossing boundaries due to inability to tolerate distances, and extreme jealousy in the category of delusional. As for the psychological control of his obsessive love are lying and manipulation. After point out the causes and the portrayal of obsessive love, the consequences for the person with obsessive love are also being discussed. These consequences experienced by Johannes are the loss of interest to make a connection with other people, excessive anxiety, and losing all of his possessions.
