Abstract

TED is a non-profit organization that is devoted to the idea of spreading ideas. TED created a program called TEDx, which is an independently organized event that brings the spirit of TED to local communities around the world by presenting the experiences of the speakers. The examples are the two TEDx Talk, Caitlyn Roux’s “Self-love, be Intentional” and Dr. Andrea Pennington’s “My journey to self-love” which tell about their journey to love themselves. Seven translation techniques were used in the translating process of Caitlyn Roux’s “Self-love, be Intentional” and Dr. Andrea Pennington’s “My journey to self-love”. These techniques were description, borrowing, linguistic amplification, transposition, compensation, established equivalent and linguistic compression. The obstacles in the translation process were a lack of understanding of translation techniques, a lack of knowledge in some unfamiliar phrase and terms related to psychology, and a lack of skill in conveying the true meaning of the source language into the target language. The problems were solved by learning more about translation techniques, checking unfamiliar phrase and terms in the dictionary then adjusting their meaning to the context of the sentence or text, re-reading the transcript of the two TEDx Talk, and trying to translate the meaning. The supervisors also help to overcome obstacles by conducting consultations. TED adalah organisasi nirlaba yang mengabdikan diri pada gagasan untuk menyebarkan ide. TED membuat program bernama TEDx, sebuah acara yang diselenggarakan secara independen dan membawa semangat TED ke komunitas lokal di seluruh dunia dengan cara mempresentasikan pengalaman para pembicara. Contohnya adalah kedua TEDx Talk, “Self-love, be Intentional” oleh Caitlyn Roux dan “My journey to self-love” oleh Dr. Andrea Pennington yang menceritakan tentang perjalanan mereka untuk mencintai diri sendiri. Tujuh teknik penerjemahan digunakan dalam proses penerjemahan “Self-love, be Intentional” oleh Caitlyn Roux dan “My journey to self-love” oleh Dr. Andrea Pennington. Teknik tersebut yaitu deskripsi, peminjaman, amplifikasi linguistik, transposisi, kompensasi, padanan lazim, dan kompresi linguistik. Kendala dalam proses penerjemahan adalah kurangnya pemahaman tentang teknik penerjemahan, kurangnya pengetahuan dalam beberapa frasa dan istilah asing yang terkait dengan psikologi, dan kurangnya keterampilan dalam menyampaikan makna sebenarnya dari bahasa sumber ke dalam bahasa sasaran. Kendala tersebut diselesaikan dengan mempelajari lebih dalam tentang teknik penerjemahan, memeriksa frasa atau istilah asing di kamus kemudian menyesuaikan artinya dengan konteks dalam kalimat atau teks, membaca kembali transkrip dari kedua TEDx Talk dan mencoba menerjemahkan maknanya. Pembimbing juga membantu untuk mengatasi kendala dengan melakukan konsultasi.
